Songlines Music Travel, in association with Master Travel, Asphalt Tango and Transilvania invites music lovers and travellers alike on this wonderful opportunity to experience the real sounds of Romania.

Asphalt Tango transilvania

This trip will give you a unique insight into the music and heritage of this fantastic region, including visits to two legendary musical villages: Clejani, the home of Taraf de Haidouks, and Zece Prajini, the home of Fanfare Ciocarlia. We will also experience the urban lautari music of Bucharest and the gorgeous string band music of Transylvania.

Highlights include:

  • Meeting and staying with local villagers and musicians in Clejani and Zece Prajini
  • Exploring the capital Bucharest and the Saxon villages of Transylvania
  • Visiting UNESCO world heritage sites and seeing medieval castles and fortified churches

Romania Itinerary

Please note that this is a provisional itinerary only. The final itinerary will be confirmed in your pre-departure pack which will be sent to you 2 weeks before departure.

27th May: Bucharest

Upon arrival into Bucharest, check into the hotel and meet our Songlines Travel Leaders. Time at leisure to explore the city before dinner with typical Romanian food, local wine and traditional music.

28th May: Zece Prajini

Travel to the Moldavian village of Zece Prajini, in the northeast of the country, where we will spend the next two days staying with families in the village. The accommodation is simple but comfortable.

29th May: Zece Prajini

Explore the village and its surroundings. After lunch we will meet some of the musicians and get to hear about their music and traditions. There will be a concert in the heart of the village and a friendly get together in the evening.

30th May: Medias

Travel across the Carpathians into Transylvania, to Medias where we will stay in a hotel overnight.

31st May: Medias, Sighisoara, Ceuas

Take a tour of Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most intriguing towns in the region. Head to the village of Ceuas for the evening, where we will hear music from the Szaszcsavas Band. We will stay overnight again in Medias.

1st June: Medias-Clejani

Visit VISCRI, a UNESCO World Heritage Site before heading south, across the Wallachian Plain to reach the village of Clejani. Here, we will be accommodated simply by people in the village.

2nd June: Clejani

Explore the village of Clejani and meet its residents. Hear about their lifestyle and music and discover the characteristic instruments of Wallachian music. In the evening there will be music and probably dancing. Expect potent food and drink too.

3rd June: Bucharest

After breakfast, head back to Bucharest, where we will visit some of the highlights of the city. The afternoon is free for you to relax or explore. Our final evening will be spent listening to the urban music of Bucharest.

4th June: Bucharest

This morning our trip ends. There may be time for further explorations of the city before your flight home or onward travel.
