Video Exclusive: Laurel Premo's 'Ma's Maw'

Michigan-based multi-instrumentalist Laurel Premo’s new video marries the grace of a traditional Norwegian halling dance to the bluesy reverberations of her mournful guitar

Lifted from her latest album, Golden Loam, 'Ma's Maw' is Laurel Premo's slack-tuned take on gorrlaus, a traditional strand of Norwegian fiddle music.

The accompanying video features the emotive choreography of dancer Ådne Geicke Kolbjørnshus, who intensifies the music's deeply melancholic mood with moves drawn from the traditional halling dance. This Norwegian national dance is usually a conduit for joyful celebration, but here Kolbjørnshus combines it with deft manoeuvres borrowed from other genres to trace a more doleful story.
