Posted on September 25th, 2009 in World Music by .

This is a tale of queens and kings – Gypsy queens and kings. For the fourth successive year, The Legendary Gypsy Queens and Kings tour heads off around the UK from October 11-21 for another distinctly Balkan blast.

The world’s finest Gypsy talent congregate once more to tour the UK. Presided over by the queen of Gypsy music herself – Esma Redzepova – the concert also features Romanian brass powerhouses Fanfare Ciocarlia and Mahala Rai Banda, Bulgarian Gypsy rocker Jony Iliev and French rumba Gitano group Kaloome.

Also appearing is a young Romanian singer named Florentina Sandu – granddaughter of Taraf de Haidouks late fiddle player Nicolae Neacsu. The Gypsy party visits Manchester, Liverpool, Leicester, Bristol, Basingstoke, Coventry, Northampton, London and Gateshead – and quite a party it will be.

Songlines is shortlisted in The Maggies magazine cover awards

Posted on September 17th, 2009 in World Music by .

The cool, golden January/February 2009 cover of Songlines graced by Malian blues duo Amadou & Mariam has been shortlisted in the Specialist & Hobbies category of the Maggies awards 2009.

The Maggies are a national poll to celebrate and award the UK’s best magazine covers of the past year. Voting closes at midnight on October 12 across all six categories – Celebrity & Entertainment, Fashion, Lifestyle, Sports & Men’s, Business & General Interest and Specialist & Hobbies.

The likes of Q, Esquire, GQ, Harpers Bazaar, She, Geographical and Time magazines are in the running, and Songlines is up against BBC History magazine, children’s magazines Bob the Builder and Creative Steps, and film magazine Empire.

For Songlines’ January/February 2009 cover, art director Ben Serbutt used an iconic shot by Youri Lenquette of Amadou & Mariam. Using the crisp, golden colours in the shot, a simple palette helped create a clean, legible and bold cover. Also, for the first time, the masthead was blended to white, distinguishing it from other titles.
