Songlines Music Awards 2010 winners announced

Posted on April 27th, 2010 in Songlines Blog by .

Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural awards, Songlines is delighted to announce this year’s winners. The Songlines Music Awards recognise outstanding talent in world music and are voted by Songlines readers and the general public.

There are four categories: Best Artist, Best Group, Cross-Cultural Collaboration

and Newcomer – the results from the public vote generate the final nominees, the top four in each category.

The winners, selected by the Songlines editorial team, listed below, will be published in the June issue of Songlines, (#68) on sale from April 30 2010. The winners will also be announced on BBC Radio 3’s ‘World on 3’ programme, on April 30, by last year’s Best Artist winner, Rokia Traoré.

A 16-track compilation album (SPLCD003) featuring the four winners and 12 final nominees is out now on CD and download. A Songlines Music Awards 2010 app, for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, featuring excerpts and profiles on the winners and nominees, is also available to download for free from the iTunes App store.

“The audience for world music is greater now than it’s ever been,” says Simon Broughton, editor-in-chief of Songlines, “and it’s reaching out in ever more diverse directions. It’s still essential to have awards in which the leading names can be celebrated and the new and innovative names highlighted.”

Jim Moray pre-releases his new album free exclusively through Songlines

Posted on April 27th, 2010 in Songlines Blog by .

On April 30 2010 award-winning folk artist Jim Moray pre-releases his new album exclusively through the June issue of Songlines magazine (#68). Songlines readers will be the first to hear the greatly anticipated In Modern History, adding it to their collections for free.

Never a musician to stick to the prescribed routes, Moray’s world-exclusive partnership with Songlines will see him join only a handful of artists to pre-release albums in this way including Prince & McFly (the Mail on Sunday) and The Kinks’ frontman Ray Davies (The Sunday Times).

From June 11 2010 In Modern History will also be available to buy on NIAG Recordings in both standard and deluxe 2CD limited edition versions, once Songlines #68 is off-sale.

Following three albums that have inspired controversy as well as immense critical acclaim, Moray’s strategy for his fourth album is significant: “There’s a lot to be said for trying new things,” he says. “When you’re a few albums in, it’s very hard for people to form a different impression of you. So I wanted to do something interesting and something that’s exciting in itself… to create an opportunity for people to have the CD in their hand and give it a try. Perhaps having discovered the new album for free they might decide to come to a live show or want to investigate what I’ve done before, and we are also releasing a new compilation of tracks from my back catalogue to make that easy to do.”

Moray will capitalise upon Songlines’ international presence: the independent and leading world music magazine is available in 70 countries. Further, with the recent launch of its iPhone/iPod touch app, Songlines has expanded the diverse audience to which it delivers unique and exceptional content. Moray continues: “I’m hoping the partnership will aid in getting my music to a wider audience who perhaps formed an impression based on my first album eight years ago. I want to show people how much I’ve grown since then, and teaming up with Songlines is the perfect way to do that.”

Publisher Paul Geoghegan says: “We’re delighted Jim has chosen Songlines to launch his new album. He’s one of Britain’s leading folk artists and we’ve long had an interest in his music and written about his work. We’ll be working with Jim as media partner of his gigs over the coming months, as well as promoting the June issue at retail internationally, for both newsstand and record trade. We’re also expecting to develop Songlines’ distribution of the issue through new channels and particularly the folk sector, targeting independent record shops and festivals. The promotion is expected to double our usual supply at retail, with a total print run in the region of 40,000.”

Jim Moray would like to thank the support of CD manufacturers Clear Sound and Vision, without whom, this promotion would not have been possible.
