Folk legend Richard Thompson curates Meltdown festival in Southbank London
Posted on June 9th, 2010 in News by Songlines.
Fancy an antidote to the football World Cup? At London’s Southbank Centre from June 11-21, the Meltdown festival sees Richard Thompson – the folk-rock founder of Fairport Convention who received a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 – curate a season of music reflecting his own musical and cultural interests.
He follows in the footsteps of previous Meltdown curators such as David Bowie and Morrissey, and his line-up includes stars such as Elvis Costello, Paolo Nutini and Seasick Steve.
There is also an evening in celebration of folk icon Kate McGarrigle, a collaborative event between Thompson and Loudon Wainwright III and Thompson’s own 1000 Years of Popular Music and Cabaret of Souls shows, among a whole host of other events.
There is even a rare live show of BBC Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue comedy panel show. Sadly, the Malaysian group Raihan, scheduled for June 13, have had to cancel their performance.
