Here’s some exciting news as we creep back into our offices and dust off the desks after the holiday season – Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour announced on Monday that he will stand in the country’s presidential elections next month.
Youssou has always had a strong political voice as a musician, but this November he cancelled concert dates in order to focus on his political career.
His bid in February’s election poses a high-profile challenge to the incumbent president, Abdoulaye Wade’s re-election effort. Youssou has been a critic of Wade, attacking extravagant spending in a country with an extremely low average income.
As tensions and criticism toward Wade grow, Youssou’s announcement could be just be the ray of hope the country needs.
