Russian Maslenitsa Festival returns to London for second year

London is the site of the largest celebration of Russian culture, music, art and food anywhere outside Russia itself this year as the Russian Maslenitsa Festival comes to town for the second year.

Brushing up his multicultural, pro-immigration credentials ahead of the London mayoral elections in 2012, Boris Johnson has thrown his support behind this week-long, cross-capital and inter-capital event to mark the start of spring on February 19-26.

This traditional Russian springtime festival culminates in a day-long extravaganza in Trafalgar Square, including a live video link to revellers in Moscow’s Red Square.

The Trafalgar Square event, which is free to enter, will include a main stage with performances from a varied cast of Russian musicians, including Siberian throat-singing folk ensemble Ülger, the Folk State Academic Pyatnizky Choir, vocal ensemble A’Capella ExpreSSS, rock legends Chaif, and pop acts Valery Syutkin and Balagan Limited.
