In our current issue (#84 June 2012), Jan Fairley reports on Venezuela’s El Sistema programme, which has seen immense success in transforming the lives of kids.
The conductor Gustavo Dudamel and El Sistema were shot into the European limelight when he brought the Simón Bolívar Orchestra to the 2007 Edinburgh Festival and BBC Proms. However, as Jan Fairley discovered, there’s so much more to the programme than Dudamel and his talented orchestra.
Reporting from the small Venezuelan town of Los Teques, Jan was able to record some video from the intimate workings of El Sistema. You can watch her videos of the 20-something director Jonathan conducting rehearsal and performing with his assistants on our YouTube channel. You can read Jan’s full report in the current issue on p42-47.
