The Festival au Désert, usually held in Essakane, North Mali, has been recorded only once (2003). So this year, Christopher Nolan captured the entire festival on the house sound board with the help of the festival organisation. Due to less-than-perfect recording conditions, Nolan is now asking for pledges in order to finish mastering the CD. Although the album is important because it is only the second recording of the festival, it is also a recording of the last festival to be held in Mali due to the 2012 Touareg rebellion (which you can read more about in our last issue, #88). The 16-track CD features artists such as Habib Koité, Tinariwen and Abdoulaye Diabaté amongst many others.
There is only one week to go until their crowdfunding deadline. So far they have managed to raise over 90% of their goal ($5,000). Donations will go towards finishing and mastering the CD, design, artwork and distribution. Proceeds from further album sales will go towards the Festival au Désert 2013, which will be held in Burkina Faso.
