This Sunday the non-profit organisation globalFest celebrates its tenth anniversary, bringing groundbreaking world music once again to Webster Hall in New York City.
Since its inception as a one-night showcase festival a decade ago, globalFEST has brought global sounds from the margins to centre stage. It has become an important musical hub for spotting genuine global talent and launching their careers in the US.
Continuing its commitment to support artists from the culturally rich, diverse Gulf Coast region since Hurricane Katrina, globalFEST has added the Stooges Brass Band from New Orleans.
They will be joined by another 11 artists over three stages, including Songlines Music Awards 2012 Newcomer Fatoumata Diawara, French fusionistas Lo’Jo (featured in the current issue, #89), kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kahlor & Erdal Erzincan, and Oliver Mtukudzi and the Black Spirits. Stay tuned for our next issue, on sale in the UK on February 1, which will feature our guide to New York City’s music venues, festivals and events.
