The Nairobi-London soundclash return with infectious new single
Owiny Sigoma Band are set to release their sophomore album Power Punch, on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings on April 8 2013. Exploring new influences from techno to electronica, the Nairobi and London-based band continue to also embrace the sounds of East Africa.
The group’s acclaimed self-titled debut in 2011 (reviewed in June 2011, #76) was hailed as a one of the year’s most interesting releases. Five London-based musicians including Jesse Hackett (keys) and Chris Morphitis (bouzouki and guitar) travelled to East Africa to record with Joseph Nyamungu, a nyatiti (eight-stringed harp) master musician, and Charles Owoko, a Luo drummer. On the new record, Owiny Sigoma Band have reversed the dynamic, and invited Joseph and Charles to record in London instead.
Infected by the sounds of shangaan electro from South Africa, the new album is set to feature high tempos, hard-hitting bass drums and the eminent danceability created by Joseph Nyamungu’s nyatiti playing.
The first single taken from Power Punch, ‘Owiny Techno’ was premiered last week and can be heard below
