Winners of the 12th Independent Music Awards world music category announced
This year’s awards for independent bands and artists have been announced by the 12th Independent Music Awards (IMAs) program.
In the world music category, Sofia Rei, was awarded the World Beat Award for her album De Tierra y Oro. The Argentinian singer was overjoyed at winning for the second time since her previous award in 2009 with the album Sube Azul.
The award for the World Traditional Album went to the Iranian duo Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat for their album Twinklings of Hope, released by the Norwegian label, Kirkelig Kulturverksed. The duo have been outlawed in their native Iran following the banning of all female vocal performance since the 1979 Islamic revolution, but refuse to give up their voices. In the compilations category, the archival recordings from Woody Guthrie, Woody at 100: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection, received the honor for the Smithsonian Folkways label.
The judging panel was made up of top musicians, such as Tom Waits, Ziggy Marley, Chris Wood, G Love, and Judy Collins, as well as record label executives, club and festival talent buyers, music journalists and film and TV music supervisors.
In addition to the winners already announced by the judging panel, fans from around the world can have their say by voting for their favourite nominee to be awarded the 12th IMAs Vox Pop. To date, over 23,000 people have voted, and those yet to do so have until Friday, July 19 to cast their vote at www.TheIndependentMusicAwards.com/imanominee/12th. These winners will receive additional marketing support from the IMAs.
