Now in its fifth year, The London International Festival of Exploratory Music (LIFEM) is focusing exclusively upon the sounds of Finnish musicians. Taking place from October 30 – November 2, at London’s Kings Place, you can hear the music of Värttinä (pictured), the most successful Finnish folk act ever, see the debut London concert of Timo Alakotila and Maria Kalaniemi and watch the premiere of accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen‘s film Soundbreaker.
Värttinä, celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, have just released a new single ‘Lasetus’.
The trailer for Soundbreaker can be viewed below. The showing will be on October 31 in the St Pancras Room, and you can register for tickets here.
To get a taste of what’s on offer, the current issue of Songlines (Oct 2013, #95) comes with a bonus CD, Arctic Paradise; an exclusive release of 19 tracks from many artists performing at LIFEM, including Tsuumi Sound System, Jimi Tenor, and Iiro Rantala. It also includes tracks from artists performing at this year’s WOMEX.
In addition to our CD from issue, LIFEM have provided a 2013 Soundcloud playlist, compiled by Red Orange for your listening pleasure:
