Luaka Bop will release World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? on October 28
Although virtually unknown in the West, Nigerian artist William Onyeabor is beloved by die-hard record collectors, including Four Tet, Damon Albarn, and Devendra Banhart.
David Byrne’s record label, Luaka Bop (who are incidentally celebrating their 25th anniversary), is the first label to successfully license Onyeabor’s music and introduce it to a wider audience. It has scheduled the centerpiece collection, World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor?, for release on October 28.
Among the many artists who have expressed excitement about Luaka Bop’s Onyeabor project is Dan Snaith (Caribou): ‘You never forget hearing his music for the first time. All the genre tags, they miss the point, they miss the magic.’
You can download the track ‘Ye Ye’ in which Snaith (billed as Daphni), reworks Onyeabor’s ‘When the Going is Smooth and Good’.
