If you haven’t already been won over by this six-piece from Zimbabwe, then now is your chance, as they’re currently on a 12-date Making Tracks tour of the UK.
On evidence of the fabulous show they put on at a packed-out Rich Mix in London on April 1, I’m certain they’ll be heading back to Victoria Falls with legions of new fans.
It’s only four months since they performed at the Songlines Music Awards Winners’ Concert (highlights video below), yet this was a very different show, really demonstrating just how talented and versatile these guys are. With no drum kit or keyboards, just bass, guitar and an impressive range of percussion, they played a semi-acoustic, pared-down set of practically brand new material, with just two songs from their Rising Tide album. But the one thing that remains constant is the voice of lead singer Mathias Muzaza – and what a gob-smacking voice it is. He has the sort of range and delivery that makes your jaw drop. The rest of the group sounded pretty good too, with lots of a capella singing, funky group percussion and nifty dance moves. Their infectious energy certainly worked a treat on the audience who didn’t hesitate to join in with the call-and-response songs and were dancing from the get-go – it’s been a while since I’ve experienced such an enthusiastic response from a London crowd.
Go on, treat yourself to a thoroughly good night out and book yourself a ticket to check out these guys. They’re playing in Cambridge tonight, then Poole, Bradford on Avon, Bristol, Swansea, Birmingham, York, Bury St Edmunds, Milton Keynes and Brighton.
