Singer, novelist and short-story writer Gabriella Ghermandi has been crowned the winner of the latest World Music Network Battle of the Bands with ‘Atse Tewodros’ taken from Atse Tewodros Project
Born in Addis Ababa in 1965, Gabriella Ghermandi is of Italian-Ethiopian descent. She launched the Atse Tewodros Project in the Ethiopian capital back in 2010, with the purpose of bringing together Italian and Ethiopian musicians to encourage mutual dialogue and artistic creation. Speaking to Songlines, Ghermandi commented on her win:
“I’m excited for the possibilities this creates for playing in Europe, where we can expose an audience to the music of thousands of Ethiopian groups playing back home. Art is made for awareness and gives people context to think about things, it is not just about the performance.”
The winning track, ‘Atse Tewodros’, is dedicated to Emperor Tewodros II (reigned 1855-68), one of the most beloved emperors in Ethiopian history due to his perseverance and commitment to modernisation, integration and opposition to colonisation.
