Watch an exclusive trailer for the upcoming album release that marks the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War
Hanoi Masters: War is a Wound, Peace is a Scar is the first part of a new series of releases from Glitterbeat Records titled Hidden Musics, which aims to highlight lesser-known music traditions from around the world. Produced by Grammy-award winning producer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, The Good Ones), Hanoi Masters is a collection of mesmeric songs performed by elderly musicians who recall not just their own personal loss, but their whole country’s during the ‘American War.’
At the heart of the recordings is a sense of longing for what has been lost, even more potently felt when set against the backdrop of one of South-East Asia’s fastest growing economies still embattled with political and social discontent. ‘Let it suffice to say that these artists are a far cry from the lip-synching karaoke show that we saw on the local cable’ remarks Brennan. ‘These elders carry a haunting but muted sadness that seems only fully revealed through the music that they valiantly keep alive in the fact of industrialisation.’
Hanoi Masters: War is a Wound, Peace is a Scar will be released on March 30. Pre-order your copy. Watch the trailer below.
