Don Kipper have won World Music Network’s Battle of the Bands with their song ‘Gunesim’
Influenced by the music of the Mediterranean, the innovative seven-piece perform music exhibiting a unique blend of musical styles from klezmer and Greek rebetika to Gypsy jazz. Having recently released their self-titled debut and won the Moshe Beregovski Award for Newcomers, this year looks to be a big one for this promising act.
The winning track ‘Gunesim’ showcases a trio of the Kippers – guitar, violin and voice. The intricate strumming of acoustic guitar and pizzicato of the violin provide a light and lush backdrop to the vocals of the group’s singer, Dunja Botic. An intimate performance led by meandering vocalisations and Mediterranean-influenced harmonies, the track is sure to send shivers down your spine.
Taken from a shortlist voted for by the world music community, Don Kipper were awarded by a panel of judges from Songlines, World Music Network, the BBC, and independent radio.
