This podcast includes highlights from the August/September 2010 issue of Songlines (#70) opening with an excerpt from Cheikh Lô (cover artist this issue). Editor in chief, Simon Broughton, plays an extract from the second free CD with this issue Music from Minas Gerais/Brazil as well as an excerpt from the new album by Dobet Gnahore Djekpa La You on Contre Jour.

Features include: Rose Skelton on Cheikh Lô and Carlou D, Jane Cornwell with her Beginner’s Guide to Aboriginal band Yothu Yindi. Nathaniel Handy brings you the latest news with the Official UK World Music Album Chart, music from Mayra Andrade and Jon Boden as well as his report on Morris Dancing. The podcast ends with a live track by oud player Khyam Allami.

The next Songlines podcast, featuring highlights from the October issue (#71), will be available from September 3 2010.

Winners of the Songlines Music Awards 2010 will receive their gongs over the WOMAD Festival weekend as they join the line-up of the UK’s biggest world music event.

On the evening of Friday July 23, new African sensations Staff Benda Bilili will receive their award for Best Group, presented to them by world music writer and reporter Robin Denselow after their performance on the Open Air Stage, which starts at 7pm.

On the evening of Saturday July 24, British guitarist Justin Adams and Gambian singer and ritti (one-stringed fiddle) player Juldeh Camara will receive their award for Cross-Cultural Collaboration, presented to them by world music legend and WOMAD founder Peter Gabriel after their performance in the Siam tent, which starts at 6pm.

The August/September 2010 issue of Songlines is on sale in the UK from July 23 and includes our regular Top of the World CD with ten tracks from the finest new releases from around the planet, plus a second free CD showcasing music from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. There’s also a selection of five tracks selected by BBC radio presenter Simon Mayo.

The Top of the World CD includes tracks from spiritual Senegalese star Cheikh Lô; the mother and daughter of English folk Norma Waterson & Eliza Carthy; samba’s Frank Sinatra Wilson das Neves; fantastic musical meetings between The Bulgarian Voices Angelite with Huun-Huur-Tu & Moscow Art Trio and a collaboration between kora player Ballaké Sissoko and cellist Vincent Segal; and politically-charged African song from Western Sahara’s Mariem Hassan and Cameroon’s Lapiro de Mbanga, among others.
