Posted on June 22nd, 2011 in Songlines Blog by Alexandra Petropoulos.
If, like me, you are being left behind this weekend while all the cool kids are going to Glastonbury – don’t despair! There are some fantastic shows happening right here in London that all those cool kids are going to miss…

Mostly importantly, the Songlines Encounters Festival will be taking place at Kings Place this weekend. It features a stellar line-up, including the Finnish harmonica quartet Sväng, fado star Carminho, Hungarian tambura ensemble Söndörgő and more. www.songlines.co.uk/encounters
The Barbican’s Blaze Festival also begins this weekend and runs until the end of July. Blaze kicks off with Ludovico Einaudi and La Notte della Taranta Orchestra followed by some hip-shaking Shangaan Electro. www.barbican.org.uk/blaze/whats-on
Like Bollywood? Then head on over to the Peacock Theatre at Sadler’s Wells to see the acclaimed theatrical dance The Merchants of Bollywood, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. www.sadlerswells.com/show/Merchants-of-Bollywood-2011
If you are more in the mood for Mexican, grab your margaritas and head to Lucha Future at Roundhouse. Complete with Mexican men in action, food from the country and funky music from Mexico’s Nortec Collective, this will prove to be a fun night out. www.roundhouse.org.uk/whats-on/productions/lucha-future
Don’t live in London? Check our new online Gig Guide. There’s gigs aplenty this weekend that will make your Glasto friends jealous.
Feel the summer heat at Blaze festival in and around the Barbican in London

CREATE 09 brings together arts, music and culture in the five host boroughs of the London 2012 Olympics. It is an umbrella for a host of festivals, live music events and community street parties happening across Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest boroughs.
Part of the festivities, that will run each summer towards the Olympics, is a new summer music and dance series by the Barbican called Blaze. Kicking off on June 19, Blaze takes place both at the Barbican and out in the leafy surroundings of Paradise Gardens in Victoria Park and the cool atmosphere of Cargo in London’s east end.
Top world music names on this summer’s bill include tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussein, Cuban legends Orquesta Aragón and Los Van Van, veteran Argentine tangueros Café de los Maestros, flamenco songstress Carmen Linares and Balkan brass titans Boban Markovic and Goran Bregovic.
