Gilles Peterson to release Havana Cultura Mix: The Soundclash!

Posted on October 3rd, 2014 in News, Recent posts by .

Gilles Peterson’s forthcoming Cuban compilation features the talents of vocalists, musicians and unsigned artists from around the world

In February this year, the BBC 6Music DJ launched an initiative, in association with Havana Club, that offered artists a unique opportunity to travel to Havana for ten days and record with Cuban musicians. After sifting through hundreds of remix competition entries, ten artists from around the world (UK, Germany, Hungary, Holland, South Africa, Russia, Switzerland, Chile and Cuba) were selected by Gilles and his Brownswood production partner Simbad.

In keeping with Cuba’s rich history of musical exchange, the album boasts a combination of the best electronic music with the sounds of Havana’s homegrown hip-hop, reggaeton, electronica and Afro-Latin beats scenes. Listen to ‘Yemaya’, a collaboration between Yeni and Coki from the rumba group Aguiri-Yo and Hungarian producer Géza Szekeres.

Release date: October 27. Find out more at Pre-order the album here.

Gilles Peterson launches remix competition with Havana Club

Posted on February 18th, 2014 in News, Recent posts by .

BBC Radio 6Music’s Gilles Peterson has launched an initiative, in association with Havana Club, that offers artists a unique opportunity to travel to Havana for ten days and record with Cuban musicians.

Having worked extensively with Cuba’s musicians in the past, Peterson has a strong affinity for the country. His label Brownswood Recordings released the critically acclaimed Mala in Cuba in 2012, in which Mala worked closely with Peterson and Roberto Fonseca’s band.

To enter the competition, entrants have to visit and remix the track ‘Agita’. The project is open to anyone – from budding musicians to established DJs/producers – and entries need to be in by March 31.

Gilles said of the project: “I’ve been lucky enough to work in Cuba with Havana Cultura and make four albums with not only the new generation of Cuban musicians, but some legends of the scene. I’m excited about Havana Club Cultura Mix. I can’t wait to collaborate with talented producers from around the world and some of Cuba’s finest musicians in one of the world’s music capitals. Winners can expect to make music that they will never, ever regret!”

Top of the World: Owiny Sigoma Band – Power Punch!!!

Posted on June 16th, 2013 in Recent posts, Reviews by .

Words by Max Reinhardt

A knockout blow

An apt title indeed! Owiny Sigoma Band have aimed high and stolen the electronic Afro-roots crown. Their music has become a revelatory fusion, bringing together the Kenyan Luo tradition and the melting pot of London’s club scene, making the walls shake in any language. The project started when Jesse Hackett and others from the electronic hip-hop/soul collective Elmore Judd visited Kenya at the invitation of an NGO promoting local musicians. They started playing with Joseph Nyamungu, a vocalist and nyatiti (eight-stringed lyre) player, and Charles Owoko, a Luo drummer. Last time around they recorded in Nairobi. But for this second album, the Luo musicians joined their partners and recorded in London. The result will undoubtedly prove to be one of the albums of the year.

It’s not just the thudding sub-bass and the skittering electronics that propel the music. It’s the influence of the many cosmopolitan styles and rhythms of the streets and clubs of London. You’ll hear a Shangaan electro influence in the rhythms, a dubstep feel in the bass lines, Congolese stylings in the guitars, an indie feel in some of the melodies and a London jazz/soul vibe to some of the vocal tracks. Not to forget, of course, the power of Nyamungu’s mighty voice, while the Luo rhythms really ground the grooves. Truly outstanding.
