Our inaugural Songlines Encounters Festival at London’s Kings Place last month was a great success. The three days featured talks, workshops, free foyer events, and films as well as plenty of concerts. For those of you who missed the festival, Haydn Wheeler was there to capture it all.

Harmonica monsters Svang, playing regular mouth organs plus what look like a toaster and an over-sized Blackberry. Great artists and very nice guys

Fado singer Carminho - probably the most popular gig - although here in a rather severe pose. This was her UK debut

London’s Kings Place hosts Songlines’ very own, inaugural Encounters Festival on June 23-25.
As part of its 75th issue celebrations, the magazine has teamed up with Ikon Arts Management to programme eight concerts featuring rising talent from around the world, as well as workshops in Bulgarian singing, Balkan and klezmer music and film screenings and conversations.
The festival sees the UK debut of Cretan lyre player Stelios Petrakis in a new trio formation with Spanish guitarist Efrén López and Iranian percussionist Bijan Chemirani.
It also sees the highly anticipated UK debut of the new star of Portuguese fado, Carminho, alongside a screening of the film, Mariza and the Story of Fado.
Finnish harmonica quartet Sväng, Hungarian plucked tambura musicians Söndörgö and UK-based Balkan and klezmer band She’koyokh are as unique and eclectic in sound as their names are.
The one-off Circle of Sound South Asian concert brings together sarod player Soumik Datta, clarinetist Arun Ghosh and drummer Taalis.
In the regular Friday folk slot there’s Ewan McLennan, who just won the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the Radio 2 Folk Awards, with guest singer Jackie Oates. And doing his superb Latin Jazz on Saturday is pianist Alex Wilson (his Mali Latino was a Top of the World in #72). He’ll play solo, with his trio and in a special Songlines collaboration.
