The Yorkshire Festival presents ‘The Songlines Series’ at the Howard Assembly Room

The Howard Assembly Room in Leeds hosts the Songlines Series

The Yorkshire Festival, which runs from June 16 to July 3, has programmed five concerts featuring some of world and folk music’s finest artists to take place in Leeds’ Howard Assembly Room, in association with Songlines.

Critically acclaimed Congolese band Mbongwana Star begin proceedings on June 22, followed by Malian singer and guitarist Rokia Traoré the day after, who performs material from her latest album Né So.

German pianist Hauschka fuses elements of electronica, techno and ambient music on June 24; the American folk duo A Hawk and a Hacksaw perform their deeply rooted Eastern European music from their back catalogue and forthcoming album, and acclaimed musician and Yorkshire-born Eliza Carthy rounds off the series with her Wayward Band on July 2 showcasing a wide range of music from her an extensive discography, plus new material from a forthcoming album.

A selection of artists playing at Yorkshire Festival also feature on a free bonus CD, available exclusively with the new issue (May, #117), now on sale. Find out more.

London Roundhouse to stage In the Round concert series

Roundhouse’s introduces a new series – In the Round – which will feature intimate performances January 28-February 6

London’s iconic music venue, Roundhouse, will begin their 2016 music programme with a week-long series of intimate concerts called In the Round. The series will feature some of the world’s best artists in an intimate setting, turning the central arena into a seated concert space. 

The series will kick off with a rare solo show by Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter Gaz Coombes. There will also be performances from Irish musician and actress Camille O’Sullivan, Ethio-jazz maestro Mulatu Astatke, and Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré, who will be performing new material from her forthcoming album Né So.

Ticket prices range from £12.50-£45 and are available on the official website.

Rokia Traoré to release new album in February

Rokia Traoré will release a new album, Né So, on Nonesuch Records on February 12

The Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré announced that she will be releasing her sixth album, Né So, this February. The album sees the return of John Parish as producer after his role on her 2013 album Beautiful Africa, and features a wide range of guest performances from former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison, to Ivorian bassist Mathieu N’guessan and fellow labelmate Devendra Banhart.

The album features ten original songs and a cover of Billie Holiday’s ‘Strange Fruit’. It is available to preorder at iTunes

Rokia will also headline London’s Roundhouse on February 6 as part of the venue’s new In the Round concert series. Tickets are available now. For more information, visit Traoré’s official website and Nonesuch Records.
