Africa Express – the spontaneous, collaborative events that have brought top Western and African talent together since Damon Albarn’s infamous Glastonbury 2007 event – is lining up for an extra special Cultural Olympics series of events in 2012.
These include a Peace One Day festival in Derry, Northern Ireland featuring an opera commission by Albarn, Rufus Norris and Jamie Hewlett, a new collaboration between Rokia Traoré, Toni Morrison and Peter Sellars, River of Music public concerts by the Thames and an outdoor festival in East London with coverage from the BBC.
It will also include many more Africa Express events across the UK, and with past collaborators including Salif Keita, Amadou & Mariam, Toumani Diabaté, Fatboy Slim, the Magic Numbers and Martha Wainwright, it promises to be a truly Olympic-sized spectacle.
