With the Songlines Music Awards now in their fourth year, we are delighted to announce this year’s winners.
The awards recognise outstanding talent in world music and are voted by Songlines readers and the general public. There are four categories: Best Artist, Best Group, Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Newcomer – the results from the initial vote generate the final nominees, the top four in each category.
The winners, selected by the Songlines editorial team and listed below, are published in the June issue of Songlines (#84).
A 16-track compilation album featuring the winners and all nominees is out now on CD and download (you can listen to tracks from the CD below). A Songlines Music Awards 2012 app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch is also available to download for free from the iTunes App store.

Watch our short film on the Songlines Music Awards 2012 winners with live performances and an introduction by editor-in-chief Simon Broughton:
Touareg rockers Tinariwen will be returning to London after a jam-packed performance in October. They will be performing on May 3 at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire with indie/folk singer-songwriter José González.
It will be a fantastic night of music if their October gig at KOKO is anything to go by – so be sure to get yourself there even if you have to beg, borrow or steal a ticket.
Tinariwen are known for their hypnotic desert blues and have recently released the album Tassili, which includes guests Kip Malone and Tunde Adebimpe from the band TV on the Radio and has proved to be a smash hit.
González, whose family fled Argentina for Sweden after Junta came into power, beautifully utilises a hybrid of both worlds and will be a perfect balance to Tinariwen’s mesmerising blues.
Concert goers who choose to buy a subscription to Songlines alongside their ticket will receive a free copy of Tinariwen’s Tassili. Tickets and our special offer are available through Ticketweb.
This year’s Grammy nominees have been announced and you’ll be pleased to hear there are some familiar names shortlisted for the Best World Music Album Award. Congratulations go to AfroCubism (AfroCubism), Femi Kuti (Africa For Africa), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (Songs From a Zulu Farm) and Tinariwen (Tassili).
The awards ceremony will be held on February 12 in Los Angeles for their 54th incarnation. We wish the artists the best of luck; we’d be hard pushed to choose!
Wednesday saw the Touareg group Tinariwen play to a jam-packed KOKO, in what was a exciting and memorable gig. Supported by English folk singer Eliza Carthy, Tinariwen easily impressed the crowd with their guitar-riffing, calabash-banging and robe-twirling rock. While the Songlines crew were only able to pop in and out of the gig while manning a stand out front, we caught everyone at the end leaving with happy faces and exclamations of praise.
If you happened to miss them, or if you saw them and want to hear more, there is still time to take advantage of our exclusive promotion.
