Canadian Kaia Kater's a tough, drawling voice and magnificent banjo work seamlessly together, marking her as a contemporary, organic part of an ancient tradition

Kaia Kater was born to African-Caribbean parents in Québec and went on to study Appalachian music in West Virginia. This bridge between two worlds has undoubtedly influenced Kater’s unique sound, and her individual take on American roots music. She is an accomplished banjo player with a rich, bluesy, drawling vocal; her songwriting is infused with a jazz influence. Through her music she touches upon themes such as the Black Lives Matter movement, particularly in her second album Nine Pin (a Top of the World in #123). Kater’s raw talent is a live experience to behold.
