Songlines Music Awards Winners’ Concert

Posted on August 20th, 2012 in News, Recent posts by .

We are delighted to announce our very first Songlines Music Awards Winners’ Concert at the Barbican on Friday November 23. The concert will feature performances by Indian sitar star Anoushka Shankar (Best Artist, pictured) and Touareg desert rock band Tinariwen (Best Group), as well as appearances by special guests.

Daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, Anoushka started learning the sitar aged nine. In her teens she was regularly playing onstage with her father and had released three albums by the age of 20. But alongside her classical sitar work, she has also recorded contemporary fusion projects, including Traveller, which won her this year’s award.

The Touareg group Tinariwen have been bringing their electrified desert blues to international audiences for more than a decade. They have won fans amongst people not normally interested in African music, played over 800 concerts around the world and inspired a flock of other Saharan bands.

To reserve your tickets, please call the Barbican Centre at +44 (0)844 848 5218 or visit their website here.

Please note that this is a concert, not an awards ceremony.

Songlines Music Awards 2012

Posted on January 14th, 2012 in News, Recent posts by .

Well, it’s officially 2012 and, as may be expected, the first few weeks of the new year often find people reflecting upon the best and worst of the one that has just past.

We’ve already made a list of our top 10 albums from 2011 (you can read more about them in our current issue), and other blogs are rife with their own selections. Some of the best ones that we came across were: Small World Music Notes, who picked out their 30 favourite albumsSounds and Colours, who selected their top Latin albums, and World Music, who listed their top 20 albums.

But enough of what we think were the best albums! We want to know what you thought were 2011′s outstanding releases.

We’ve collected all the albums that were reviewed in Songlines over the past year and are asking our readers, fans and followers to vote for their favourites. There are four categories – Best Artist, Best Group, Best Newcomer, and Best Cross-cultural Collaboration – and you only have a few more weeks to cast your vote.

Voting closes January 31, so get voting people! And remember that by doing so you’ll automatically be entered into a prize draw to win one of three pairs of tickets to WOMAD Charlton Park (July 26-29 2012), plus we have 10 runner’s up prizes of the Songlines Music Awards 2011 CD featuring all of last year’s winners and nominees.

We’d also love to hear who you voted for and why in the comments below.
