The new October Songlines podcast is now available through iTunes

This podcast includes highlights from the October 2012 issue of Songlines (#87) opening with music from Staff Benda Bilili’s new album. Songlines editor-in-chief, Simon Broughton, plays an excerpt by Wasifuddin Dagar, a bonus track chosen by Peter Sellars as part of his playlist this issue. There is also music from the new album by The Unthanks.

Features include: Mordechai Beck on Nino Biton, Tim Cumming on the Krar Collective and Simon Broughton discusses the contents of the NASA Voyager interstellar record. Nathaniel Handy brings you the latest news with the Official UK World Music Album Chart and more. The podcast ends with music by The Klezmatics.

October 2012 issue of Songlines (#87) is on sale in the UK from August 31

The October 2012 issue of Songlines is on sale in the UK from August 31 and includes our regular Top of the World CD with ten tracks from the finest new releases from around the planet. The Top of the World CD also includes five tracks selected by contemporary theatre and opera director, Peter Sellars.

The Top of the World CD includes tracks from Kinshasa collective Staff Benda Bilili; French fusionists Lo’Jo; Scottish folk singer Karine Polwart; Thai 70s golden era fiddler Thonghuad Faited; late Malian guitarist Zani Diabate & Les Heritiers; and US folk veteran Tom Paley’s Old-Time Moonshine Revue, among others.





The main editorial features include:

• Staff Benda Bilili – A personal diary from Kinshasa, by two men who work closely with the band as they record their latest album.
• NASA – Music for Aliens – The American space agency’s musical launch. Simon Broughton examines the contents of the Voyager interstellar record.
• Darbar Festival – A look at the London-based festival that is set to showcase some of the sublime, rare ragas that are often overlooked.
• Krar Collective – Tim Cumming chats to the trio who have emerged from the Éthiopiques generation.
