March 2014: Top 10 UK live events

There are so many fantastic concerts going on this March that we’ve compiled a list of the top ten to help make sure you don’t out of this month’s best shows.

Idan Raichel          


The Israeli songwriter – who has worked with an incredible array of artists in the past, including Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré (pictured above) – is visiting London for a one-off special gig, showcasing music from his new album Quarter to Six. He is known for his unique fusion of Arabic and Ethiopian musics and electronics, however this intimate show will see him perform his works on the piano in the manner in which he composed them in Israel.

Reflection of Silence: Flavours of Iranian and Kurdish Music


This creative improvisation sees four artists of varying backgrounds collaborating for an exciting evening of Persian and Kurdish music. Tara Jaff (pictured), the Iraqi-Kurdish harpist and singer will be joined by Iranian guitarist Pouya Mahmoudi, setar maestro Mehdi Rostami, and Adib Rostami (tombak and kamancheh).

Sidi Touré


Featured in this month’s issue of Songlines (#98), Sidi Touré will be touring the UK playing songs from this new album Alafia. Hailing from Gao, Mali, he has rapidly become an important artist and representative of Songhai culture.  The bluesman will be playing three dates across the country.

Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba


The Malian ngoni star and his band will tour the UK this March. His most recent album Jama Ko was voted as one of Songlines’ Best Albums of 2013, so don’t miss the chance to see him live.

The Elizabethan Session


Some of the best artists of the British folk scene are living together for a week in a rural retreat, writing music inspired by the Elizabethan period. This exciting event shall see the fruits of their labours. The session will feature Martin Simpson, Nancy Kerr, Jim Moray, Bella Hardy, John Smith, Emily Askew, Rachel Newton and Hannah James.

Juan Martin


Virtuoso spanish guitarist Juan Martin is touring a spectacular show this March with his Flamenco Dance Ensemble. He shall also be accompanied by singer Amparo Heredia for his dates with the ensemble.

Following the release of their seventh studio album Emmaar, Tinariwen will play two very special dates at London’s Village Underground this March. They shall also perform at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival this coming May.

Damned Nations


The collaborative project between Nuba Nour and Welsh musicians Sian James, and Gwyn Jones is travelling throughout England and Wales this March. These artists – united by their shared status as minority cultures – worked together on the album DamNation at the Rockfeld studios, which is due to be released in May.

Salsa Celtica Tour 


The Scottish-Latin big band released their sixth album The Tall Islands this February, and are touring the UK with their unique blend of Afro-Latin salsa and Scottish folk.

Flamenco Festival


This year sees the 11th edition of this fantastic annual celebration of flamenco in London. Featuring a debut from Ángel Muñoz – who has collaborated with the legendary Flamenco guitarist Paco Peña – the festival also sees appearances from Farruqito, Miguel Poveda and Sara Baras.

October 2013: Top 10 UK live events not to be missed

There are hundreds of fantastic concerts going on all over the UK this October, but we at Songlines HQ have come up with ten top gigs you don’t want to miss!

Balkan Beat Box


Everyone’s favourite electro-Gypsy-punk outfit are in the UK for two dates this October. With their ever-charismatic frontman Tomer Yosef at the helm, expect a riotous show filled with cascading horn lines, hard hitting lyrics, and of course, plenty of Balkan beats from drummer and programmer Tamir Muskat.

Mulatu Astatke


Coinciding with the release of his new album Sketches of Ethiopia, the Ethio-jazz maestro shall be playing two dates at London’s Village Underground. This release has been a mainstay in the office stereo for the past few weeks, and with Astatke still finding innovation in this unique form 43 years since its conception, these shows promise to be something very special.

Shangaan Electro


The South-African dance group bring their breakneck rhythms and beats to the UK for four dates this October. Headed up by producer extraordinaire Nozinja, they have been pushing the limits for the last few years, and are at the forefront of the new wave of African dance music.

Where & When: The Exchange, Bristol October 23; WOMEX, Cardiff October 24; Bring to Light, Birmingham October 25 & 26


Transcender Weekend at the Barbican


The Barbican shall be opening its doors to a wide range of devotional, ecstatic and psychedelic music for a whole weekend this October. Some artists featuring include the Frisian fado singer NynkeMatthew Herbert recreating Terry Riley’s ‘In C’, and Nicholas Jaar’s multi-sensory experience with psychedelic visual arts. Subsonic Live


Hosted by legendary broadcaster and Reggae DJ David Rodigan MBE and the roots pioneer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Subsonic promises to be the place to catch the best in bass culture this October. British reggae talents The Resonators will also be performing, and you can listen to their track ‘Sweet Love Affair’ below.

Adriano Adewale & Benjamin Taubkin


The Brazilian pianist and composer Benjamin Taubkin is pairing up with London-based Adriano Adewale on percussion, for an exciting collaboration. Following the release of their brilliant work The Vortex Sessions in May, they will showcase some of this material. You can hear the album closer ‘Berimbau’ below:

Cigdem Aslan Album Launch


Having just released her debut album Mortissa, the incredibly versatile singer shall be taking up a three-night residency at the Vortex Jazz Club in Dalston. It will be a perfect chance to see her new work live, and there’ll be DJs playing Greek and Turkish traditional music late on into the night as well.

The Touareg superstars have just released their third album, Chatma, to great acclaim, and are playing an eight-date tour across the UK (full details here).

Värttinä at LIFEM


The Finnish close-harmony trio are part of the fifth annual LIFEM (London International Festival of Exploratory Music) line-up, and shall be celebrating their 30th anniversary. These artists have done so much for Finnish music on an international scale and this is a celebration we can raise a glass to.

Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick

Martin Carthy current copy

The veteran English folk duo embark on a tour of the south of England. Carthy remains one of folk music’s greatest innovators, and ex-Fairport Convention instrumentalist Swarbrick has long since etched his place in folk music history. An unmissable pairing. For full tour dates click here.
