The American capital is a hub, where many great musicians from all corners of the world for years have put out great music. Just think of Ethiopian legend Aster Aweke. So here comes Project Locrea, which brings together inputs from eight musicians, who are all very accomplished in bringing the essence of their various cultures to the table.
It is all very well played, but it leaves you with a feeling that you actually want to stick with one or two of the artists, while perhaps not so much with others. The group seems to have its centre around Bulgarian-born flautist Yana Nikol and Argentinian-born guitarist Cristian Perez, who also deliver the original compositions, while the rest are almost all traditional tunes from Bulgaria, China, Ethiopia and Paraguay. I like the Ethiopian singer Munit Mesfin, who offers a lot of grit on her version of ‘Abet Abet’ and gets the fine drummer, Marty Risemburg, going. I think that with touring experience and a personal expression, this collective of soloists could produce a great album. When that day comes, I am all ears.
