Named after the drug chewed from Somalia to the Middle East, El Khat are a cheerfully inventive band led by Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni living in Israel who wrote most of his band’s second album and plays many of the instruments, some constructed by himself. The resulting Albat Alawi Op. 99 is a kaleidoscope of sounds with the best tracks dominated by exuberant, wailing horns, chanted vocals and sturdy percussion.
