Purbayan Chatterjee's star-studded raga rendezvous

Sitar maestro hooks up with Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, Mame Khan and Michael League on exclusive video for Rajasthani-meets-bluegrass voyage, 'Lalitha (The Joyful Mother)'

The esteemed sitar master Purbayan Chatterjee releases a video for his track 'Lalitha (The Joyful Mother)', an epic East-meets-West summit taken from his forthcoming guest-laden album, Unbounded (Abaad).

The track, featured on Songlines' Top of the World CD compilation this month as a bonus cut, finds Béla Fleck trading licks with Hussain and League, accompanied by trenchant vocals by Mahadevan and Mame Khan, the great folk voice of Rajasthan, while Aleif Hamdan's earthy acoustic guitar rhythmics hints at American roots music, somehow fitting for this deft concordance of two seldom-paired instruments, banjo and sitar.
