Emerging from the UK’s experimental underground, DePlume’s Spotify statistics indicate that his concoction of poetry and jazz provides a taste that many are now acquiring. And why not? This record supplies a striking fusion of offbeat verse and moving grooves. ‘Thank You My Pain’ combines Buddhist-inspired verse with an angular beat that hints at highlife, guitar flicking out from the arrangement like a reptilian tongue. The record reaches transcendental heights on ‘Prayer for My Sovereign Dignity’ where DePlume’s sax surges forth on a folky lead line, transforming from jig to lilting swing time. DePlume’s palette of inspiration and ideas is varied but nothing about this album feels thrown together. This is a singular creative vision executed with craft, care and confidence.
