This is a deft mash-up of musical styles shot with energy; the band's multifarious influences show in their fresh use of vintage samples alongside live musicianship. Given how often the term ‘vintage’ is overused, it's a sweet relief to hear their considered sound, one receptive to music across eras and genres. Originally featuring two Turin-based DJs, The Sweet Life Society grew into a band melding Gypsy jazz with Indian and other Eastern influences. Their travels and travails play out in electronica and dub with swing samples and beats both mature and authentic. Moreno Turis' vocals are reminiscent of Manu Chao and the band anarchically traverses established styles to suffuse their own.
Twirling in a circus tent of illicit decadence, cabaret and carnival, tracks such as ‘M'Importa’ are immediately transporting and atmospheric. Giulietta Passeras' unique, intense and unnerving vocals are another highlight, akin to Martina Topley-Bird's (Tricky's collaborator). Each track is a tale in sound; enjoy the journey.
