Formed around the nucleus of Michel Gasco (rubab, oud) and Mohammad Miraghazadeh (tar, setar), Badieh is an exploration of the folksong repertoire of Greater Khorasan, which historically encompasses both sides of the border between Iran and Afghanistan. Following their impressive 2021 debut EP, Gasco and Miraghazadeh have expanded their list of guest musicians to include Persian classical singers Ehsan Nasibi and Golnaz Hariri – who make their presence felt on the soaring opening track ‘Yar Golakom’. The percussion section – led by regular collaborator Ramin Ahmadi on tabla – is bolstered by Puriya Bahrami on daf and Yoohanna Alavi on zarb, each skilfully decorating the simple yet intricate rhythm cycles of each piece. ‘Asheq Bodom Leili’ is another highlight, featuring a stunning guest performance from Jawad Tabesh on vocals and harmonium, as well as added rubab from virtuoso instrumentalist Nasim Khushnawaz. ‘Cho Morgh e Shab’ closes the album in suitably introspective fashion, with Hadi Sanavi on ney, adding a welcome breathy texture to the forefront of the arrangement, and Kian Kordestani on bendhir. Masterfully performed and arranged with the care and respect the material deserves, Badieh II is a worthy sequel to its predecessor, serving as an essential gateway into a vibrant canon of folksong.
