Be The Sky is a heartfelt tribute to the 90th birthday of H.H. the Dalai Lama by his long-term friends Tenzin Choegyal and Philip Glass. On ‘Until Space Remains’, Glass creates a beautiful score for the award-winning Scorchio Quartet, over which you hear the Dalai Lama recite his daily mantra: “For as long as space remains, as long as sentient beings remain, until then may I too remain, to dispel the miseries of the world”. Tenzin’s Tibetan dranyen lute’s repeating pattern enters, enriched by the strings, as his voice carries the prayer. The trance-like, 11-minute title-track begins with a rapid, continuous mantra to the goddess of compassion, Tara. Glass joins on piano, after which Choegyal’s powerful, keening, melismatic voice soars over the intensifying keyboard. Glass’ wife, Saori Tsukada, then speaks through a deep meditation practice, bringing the release to an inspiring close. Be The Sky is a wonderful gift for all to listen to.
