French producer and musical magpie DJ Click turns his gaze upon the Rajasthani city of Jaipur on this global beats fusion that brings together singers and musicians from that region with European remixers such as Transglobal Underground, Smadj and DJ Farrapo.
The result is reasonably club friendly, but with enough breathing space allowed for the qualities of the Rajasthani music to be appreciated.
The album opens with the distinctive Sufi qawwali vocal of young Indo-French singer Parveen Sabrina Khan, bringing to mind her namesake, the great Pakistani singer Abida Parveen. It sets the tone for this sweeping, trance-like journey across the Indian subcontinent and beyond, mixed into a seamless whole by DJ Click. A dramatic change of pace occurs with track six - ‘Sajan O’ featuring Sanjay Khan - when the wheeze of an accordion and a slow reggae lope take the sound far to the West. From there we encounter the wah-wah guitar and flute of DJ Farrapo’s remix of Amrat Hussain’s ‘Ajamal’. This is followed by a second remix of Parveen’s ‘Aaba Dijo’, giving the sense that the album has come full circle and is heading off once more, led by Parveen’s keening voice.
