Event Horizon

October/2018

This unique album opens at a rhythmic canter, with pulsating guitar work melded with uplifting synths to create an instrumental sound that you could imagine a TV sports programme snapping up as their theme music. It's a result of the Event Horizon Project – a coming-together of the arts and science in pursuit of raising the profile of space exploration. The duo performing it are as unusual as the project behind their debut album. Géza Frank, an Austrian uilleann piper and whistle player, has been playing Scottish traditional music since he began learning the bagpipes aged 12. Jean Damei is a French guitarist who discovered a love of Irish music as a teenager.

On this record, they are joined by violinist David Lombardi and Barry Reid on synthesizer and general electronic wizardry. It is Reid's contribution, both as musician and producer, that brings a futuristic vibe to the traditional Celtic sensibilities of Frank and Damei on original compositions informed by the work of CERN – the Swiss-based European Organisation for Nuclear Research that is exploring the frontiers of the known universe. In doing so, they are demonstrating how music can connect us with the same elusive brilliance and harmony as particle physics.
