Artist/band:

Rob Harbron & Emma Reid

Label:

Harbron & Reid

May/2016

The English concertina player and Sweden-based fiddler released their first album together in 2006, and between then and the set of tunes and songs on Flock and Fly, Reid has received the National Fiddler award in Sweden, while Harbron has been busy with The Full English, Sam Sweeney's Made in the Great War project, the instrumental trio Leveret, as well as Fay Hield and Jon Boden's bands.

For Flock & Fly they bring together tunes from disparate parts that speak sympathetic languages – polkas by Somerset's Scan Tester and from the Swedish island of Mörkö; pieces from John Playford's 17th-century The EnglishDancing Master; from Northumbrian piper Alistair Anderson; a wedding march from Shetland; and a version of ‘Pretty Saro’ learned from Bruce Molsky.

The sound of Reid's fiddle and viola, and the English concertina's high, keening sound is exquisite, the two slipping in and out of main focus as players. It's the instrumentals that really draw you in – the opening ‘November Waltz’, or the four tunes and hornpipes that make up the ‘Big Set’.
