The New York-based trio are at it again. But this time things are different – the band have grown up and become fathers. Let me assure you that this does not mean you should expect a toned-down, conservative sound from the new dads. In fact, Give marks their most progressive and hardcore album to date. To sum it up, this is electro-Gypsy protest music you can dance to.
Fatherhood seems to have made frontman Tomer Yosef, horn player Ori Kaplan and drummer/programmer Tamir Muskat even more aware of the world's problems and instilled a greater sense of rage at the way things are. Every track is thick with socio-political commentary sung over driving dance beats and trademark BBB horn lines. The subjects include everything you might expect, from fiscal inequality (‘Money’) to racial discrimination (‘Enemy in Economy’). The album's outstanding track is ‘Political Fuck’, which is both provocative and catchy. With the lyrics ‘it's not an attack/ we're just taking it back,’ it's an inspiring, rocking track – especially when heard alongside its accompanying music video featuring images from 2011's revolutions.
They are as outspoken and uncompromising as ever. It's hard to resist the album's intensity: its Balkan and hip-hop flavoured club music captures the mood of the world today perfectly.
