Faada Freddy is one of the pioneers of African hip-hop. He was a founder of the Senegalese band Daara J, whose album Boomerang won Best African Album at the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in 2003. Twelve years later, with his superb new album Gospel Journey, Faada Freddy is touring France extensively, clad in his derby hat and 30s suit. His flawless live show has been one of this year's music sensations.
This is an organic record, made only from vocals and body percussions, mixing soul, gospel and beatboxing. A new departure for the 40-year-old from Saint Louis, is mainly consists of covers, from Sia's ‘Little Black Sandals’ to Irma's ‘Letter to the Lord’, Wasis Diop's ‘Let it Go’ and Imany's ‘Slow Down’. An album full of emotion, sincerity and elegance.
