Celebrating 15 years since their formation in Santiago, Newen Afrobeat present Grietas, their dynamic fifth studio album. Enriched by a collaboration with artists like Lido Pimienta, Dele Sosimi (of Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 band), Chico Cesar and Joe Vasconcellos, the 13-piece Chilean ensemble weave a vibrant tapestry of Afro-Latin influences, spirited rhythms, horn-infused melodies and socially-charged messages.

The title-track, meaning ‘cracks’, stands out as a potent call for environmental protection. The song is elevated by Lido Pimienta’s sublime voice, her unique tone adding extra spice to an already exhilarating composition as she interjects on the inequality faced by the communities most vulnerable to global warming. The opening guitar, reminiscent of Touareg desert blues, suddenly transitions into Newen Afrobeat’s signature Afro-Latin soundscape, highlighted by mesmerising saxophone licks. ‘Mare Mare’ features climactic progressions and intense flute motifs, while ‘Widin’ explores a funkier ambience, peppered with electric guitar bends and bass riffs. ‘Lloverá’ unfolds as a musical tug-of-war, shifting between Afrobeat intensity and softer Latin pop sounds during the verses.

Grietas solidifies Newen Afrobeat’s role as global Afrobeat ambassadors, proudly infusing their Latin roots into their music. Beyond showcasing their musical prowess, the album serves as a rhythmic manifesto and a testament to their unwavering dedication to social and environmental activism.
