Tru Thoughts

Nov/Dec/2014

Having paid his producer's dues from acid jazz groups through to Gregory Isaacs and the Sugarhill Gang, Mike Pelanconi's alter-ego continues the roots reggae trip that began with 2005's The Best of Prince Fatty. His latest collaboration remixes tracks from groove guru Nostalgia 77, an artist for whom diversity is king. ‘Freedom’ is the track that originally inspired this record. A Nostalgia 77 piece produced by Pelanconi during an early session between the two, it serves as a blueprint for the album, merging two creative visions into one. Nostalgia 77's world influences wrapped up in Prince Fatty's playful imagination ensures there's all sorts of things going on here.

Opener ‘Medicine Chest’ is ripe for the dance floor, a trippy shuffle adorned with Josa Peit's elegant vocals. Smoky Kingston vibes reign over ‘Seven Nation Army’, before the doors fly open with the groove-laden bebop of ‘Positive Force’. From the African pulses of ‘Skeletons’ to the string-laden vortex of ‘Angel With No Halo’, In the Kingdom of Dub is a joyously funky showcase for both artist and remixer.
