A decade after their debut album, County Antrim's Beoga are celebrating with a lively and satisfyingly long anniversary CD and DVD package showcasing material from their four studio albums live in concert. The now five-piece ensemble – Liam Bradley (keyboards), Seán Óg Graham and Damian McKee (button accordions), Eamon Murray (bodhrán) and fiddler-vocalist Niamh Dunne – are heard at their variously rousing and relaxed best. The 20 tracks range widely from traditional reels, jigs, polkas and songs to self-penned numbers, a song by The Band's Rick Danko, the English folk song ‘Our Captain Calls All Hands’ and a phenomenal bodhrán solo from Murray, showing just why he's been awarded the All-Ireland Champion title four times. Adding sugar and spice to the predominantly Irish accent are bluesy riffs, jazzy tangos and some New Orleans raunchiness, with guest performances by the likes of Lúnasa's Trevor Hutchinson, Niall Vallely on concertina and flute player Alan Doherty adding to the already high levels of musicianship on offer.
The accompanying DVD features the complete 93-minute concert and more than 80 minutes of extras, including behind-the-scenes tour diaries and excerpts from the band's debut concert. In all, this is a hugely entertaining summation of Beoga's first decade.
