Although this album taps into the traditional folklore and rhythms of Mozambique, it is fair to say that it is a thoroughly modern and highly-produced example of contemporary African music. Originally from Mozambique Selma Uamusse has lived in Portugal since 1988. There she experienced gospel, rock, soul, Afrobeat and jazz prior to formulating her own sound. Liwoningo, her second album, means ‘Light’ in the Chope language.
Particularly impressive is the single ‘Hoyo Hoyo’ with its tama (talking drum) accompaniment counterbalanced by fuzz-tone guitar, and ‘Maputo’ sung partly in English and featuring Brazilian band Bixiga 70. Selma Uamusse is another of the new wave of accomplished female African artists to whom there are no musical boundaries. She has a similar vocal range and the same confidence that led to Angélique Kidjo’s international success. Although this record is very short, it gives a good indication of Selma Uamusse’s potential.
