This is a curious, patchily atmospheric album created by two artists who have never met. JO BISSA is a Dutch producer and electronica exponent while Kan is a multi-instrumentalist from Mauritius, where he uses music as part of his campaign to clean up the ocean. His Trash to Music project involves impressively positive recycling, transforming tin cans or plastic bottles into drums, or pieces of piping into flutes. He then creates a montage of sounds that are blended with samples of noises from the natural world. Losean – ocean, in Mauritian Creole – is an ode to the sea, in which Kan’s sonic creations are fused with BISSA’s electronica. It’s an interesting idea, but Kan’s recordings are too often reduced to pleasantly ambient background noise, in which unexpected noises are added to more predictable throbbing beats. Kan’s two solo tracks are more interesting, with ‘Larm Lazwa’ involving a kaleidoscope of sounds, including what could be temple bells, echoing voices and robust percussion and basslines, in a nine-minute piece that ebbs and flows like the sea.
