The duo Tara Fuki have been going for 20 years and, having seen them in action, that's something worth celebrating. Andrea Konstankiewicz and Dorota Barova both sing and play the cello. Although they are Czech, they usually sing in Polish preferring its ‘sonic softness.’ That said, the opening song, ‘Kdyby’ (If), on this, their sixth album, is actually in Czech, but it's their special intimate sound-world that makes Tara Fuki interesting. In this lyrical song one cello is mainly bowed, the other provides a plucked bass and the two voices sing in harmony. It's beguiling. ‘Motyle’ (Butterflies) is faster and more assertive, while ‘Rano’ (Morning) multi-tracks the voices over rhythmic cello to create a lively wake-up call. What's remarkable is that across just ten songs you never feel their resources are restricted, with their expressive vocals and varied cello sounds. A very enjoyable ‘less is more’ album.
