Batuk are a dance-infused trio hailing from South Africa. Comprised of renowned producer and rapper Spoek Mathambo, Aero Manyelo and singer Manteiga, this debut record is tailored for the cosmopolitan dance floor. Opening track ‘Força Força’ incorporates Major Lazer-style synths and moombahton (a reggaeton-house fusion) bass lines with the razor-sharp tongue of Democratic Republic of Congo rapper Lebon. The breadth of territory covered – from straight-up techno to the laidback swing of digital cumbia – is remarkable and demonstrates the wide palate possessed by its producers.
However, although this release simmers throughout, it never quite reaches a euphoric boiling point. Each track – including the catchy lead single ‘Daniel’ – is enjoyable enough but they fall short of truly hitting the peaks. The high-octane recitations on ‘Gira’ came closest to the summit and the album closer is a particular delight; ‘Canta Minha Terra’ has jolting beats, warm organ lines, infectious mbira (thumb piano) and a strong contribution from Ugandan singer Annet Nandujja. Batuk have definitely shown their worth, creating some fine soundscapes on this debut release; the next step is to really get the floor moving.
