The lack of respect or choice given to the original inhabitants of the US would have crushed lesser peoples. With tribal language prohibited, ceremonies banned and instruments smashed, Native Americans still found a way of playing their music. Many became world-renowned performers, such as Buffy Sainte-Marie and flautist Carlos Nakai. This beautifully presented collection of songs, has hard-hitting lyrics showing that the fight goes on. The liner notes and biographies of each artist are lovingly put together and worth the price of admission alone. But there are many musical standouts; renowned activist Willie Dunn bookends the collection magnificently, with ‘I Pity the Country’ needing no explanation and ‘ Peruvian Dream ’ with Jerry Saddleback combining the old and new.

It's a little too long, with some dodgy recording quality and vocal tuning. But overall it's a delightful kaleidoscope of styles and sounds; it feels like you ’ re hearing and holding history.
