This is the second volume of an ongoing series of download albums launched during the COVID-19 lockdown by The Little Unsaid’s John Elliott and featuring a chain of cover versions by artists from the UK’s independent music scene. Vol 2 features contributions from Frank Turner, Brooke Sharkey, Sean McGowan, Adam Beattie, Charlie Dore, Odette Michell and Oystercatcher.
The ethereal-voiced Brooke Sharkey begins with the lovely ‘Easy’, while newcomer Odette Michell offers a delicately arranged version of Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman’s ‘Tomorrow Will Follow Today’, and Oystercatcher employ skuzzy electric guitars and drones alongside soaring vocal harmonies on Honeyfeet’s ‘Sinner’. Sean McGowan covers Frank Turner’s ‘Get Better’, while Turner chooses Grace Petrie’s song of touring and travelling, ‘Northbound’, to unpack. Kris Drever’s affecting ‘I Didn’t Try Hard Enough’ is tenderly attended to by Charlie Dore, with touches of harmonium and xylophone, and Fiona Bevan is husky-voiced and backed by beguiling electronica on Scottish songwriter Adam Beattie’s ‘Man Running’. It’s another pleasurable, eclectic relay of songs and artists, all helping the indie music industry recover from the post-COVID bloodbath.
